Film Screening: Today the Hawk Takes One Chick with artist Jane Gillooly, who captured day-to-day life in a rural society on the threshold of simultaneous collapse and reinvention. The Lubombo region of Swaziland suffers from the world’s highest prevalence of HIV and the lowest life expectancy. This observational film is told from the perspective of three grandmothers who have become instrumental in defining a new world order in the fight against the spread of HIV. Anthropology Lecture “Supply Chains and the Human Condition,” with Anna Tsing, professor of anthropology, University of California, Santa Cruz, and the author of numerous award-winning books and articles. A new form of global capitalism is spreading across the world: supply chains in which design, production, distribution and marketing extend across continents (think Wal-Mart and Nike). This lecture describes supply-chain capitalism as it emerged and will show why we should be thinking about supply chains to understand the nexus of inequality and cultural diversity that characterizes our times.
