July 1

Retirement Reception for Susan Cotter A Distinguished Professor and clinical oncologist at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Cotter has been at Tufts since 1981, arriving two years after the university opened New England’s only veterinary school. Varis Campus Center, 4–5:30 p.m. Light food and beverages will be served. Grafton campus. 

Dental Lunch and Learn “Pedagogy for Practitioners,” an overview of adult learning theory geared specifically for dental faculty; presented by Maureen McAndrew, clinical associate professor and director of clinical faculty education at New York University College of Dentistry. Participants will explore their unique learning and teaching styles and learn ways to deliver feedback in a positive, structured way to enhance student learning in the clinical setting. Lunch will be provided. School of Dental Medicine, Merritt Auditorium, noon–12:50 p.m. Boston campus.

Revolt, Recoil, Response: German Expressionist Prints The Tufts University Art Gallery, in partnership with the Boston Public Library, presents an exhibition of rare works on paper by artists who became known as the German Expressionists. Working at the turn of the 20th century, their art embodied the turbulent social and political conditions of the time. The exhibition will include more than 40 works from preeminent artists such as Max Beckmann, Lovis Corinth, Otto Dix, Ernst Kirchner and Kathe Kollwitz. Open Conservation Studio This summer the University Art Gallery is focusing its exhibitions on the maintenance and care of paintings in Tufts’ permanent collection. The Tisch Gallery is subdivided into two distinct areas. The front section is open to the public and features rarely seen works by artists such as Elaine DeKooning and Grace Hartigan. The back sections of the gallery will be visible to visitors and will be used as active workspaces where the paintings will be de-fit from their frames and examined by the conservator Lisa Lehto Fulton. Fulton has more than 20 years’ experience as a paintings conservator and has performed work on paintings in the collections of Harvard University, Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. Nomar Garciaparra Baseball Clinic A four-day clinic (July 6, 7, 8, 9) for boys and girls ages 7 to 17. Instruction covers all baseball fundamentals, and there will be daily games and instructional drills. Cost is $325. Positive Deviance Initiative Workshop “Positive Deviance: the What, the How,” a two-day interactive workshop on PD, which is widely recognized as a highly effective tool for tackling complex problems. Participants will learn concrete facilitation and adaptive leadership skills, and will receive guidance and support from leading PD practitioners. While other giants feast on “human beans” and try to terrorize children, the BFG collects wonderful dreams and delivers them at night. Tickets for all performances are $7.
