Jumbo runners take second in Division III championships

Bolstered by four individual and two relay titles, the Tufts University women’s indoor track and field team scored 109 points to finish in second place, behind Williams College, at the 2007 New England Division III Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Maine on February 17.

Junior Cat Beck won two events to lead the Jumbos. She won the mile in 4 minutes, 57.88 seconds—her second consecutive Division III victory in that event—and took the 3,000 meters crown in 9:52.70.

Also winning the same event for the second straight season at this meet was senior tri-captain Sarah Crispin, who won the 1,000 meters in a school-record 2:53.87. That smashes the 2:59 mark that she ran last year. Also contributing to Tufts’ dominance in the middle-distance events was junior Katy O’Brien, who won the 800 meters in 2:16.89.

The Jumbos continued their great success in the relay events, winning the 4x2 and 4x4 titles. Sophomores Aubrey Wasser and Halsey Stebbins, senior Jess Mactas and freshman Andrea Ferri combined for a 1:48.08 time that edged Springfield College at the finish line of the 4x200 relay. The 4x400 of junior Kaleigh Fitzpatrick, Wasser, Crispin and Ferri gave the Jumbos their fifth straight victory in the event at the New England Division III meet. Their time of 4:02.77 nipped Bowdoin.
