University Gallery “Feeling Lucky: Recent Sculpture by Karl Stirner.” The artist selects steel plate from the scrap yards of eastern Pennsylvania to create his “essentialist” sculpture. A former blacksmith and metal-worker, Stirner’s work transforms ponderous material into substantial—and at times luminous—burnished forms that allude to the anthropomorphized body and body parts and to the functionality of oversized furniture or containers. Aidekman Arts Center, Remis Sculpture Court, through August 14. Second Annual Juried Summer Exhibition Works by 25 artists celebrate the vitality of the arts in Somerville and Medford, Tufts’ host communities; juried by Amy Ingrid Schlegel, director of the University Art Gallery, and Pascal Spengemann of Taxter & Spengemann Gallery in New York. Featured artists are Stacey Alickman, Resa Blatman, Catherine Bowen, Matt Brackett, Jan Corash, Kathleen Driscoll, Kei Egan, Jennifer Erbe, Stephanie Goode, Miriam Goodman, Alice Grossman, Milton Lau, Vincent McLoughlin, Katherine McVety, Hanna Melnyczuk, Mindy Nierenberg, David Phillips, Marilyn Ranker, John Rice, Sarah Shallbetter, Anna Shapiro, Jane Sherrill, Brenda Star, V Van Sant and Paul Weiner. Washington Tufts Alliance Join the Washington Tufts Alliance for an afternoon at the ballpark to watch the world champion Boston Red Sox take on the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards in Baltimore, Md. There are 20 tickets for each of the following sections: $13 per ticket for section 312, row H & J, and $25 per ticket for section 82, rows LL & KK (seven rows away from Manny Ramirez). Soccer Camp Tufts men’s soccer coach, Ralph Ferrigno, directs two, one-week coed soccer camps (July 18-22 and July 25-29) for players in grades 1 through 10. Goalkeeper camp offered for those interested. You do not have to sign up for both weeks. Cost is $250 a week for grades 1 to 5 and $300 a week for grades 6 to10. Houston Tufts Alliance “Exploring Space: Yesterday and Tomorrow,” Ken Goodwin, E67, and Jim Alexander, F00, talk about the U.S. space program. Goodwin will discuss his involvement with Apollo 7 through Apollo 17 at the Johnson Space Center and offer his personal thoughts on Apollo’s lessons and legacy. Alexander, who works in the International Space Station program, will talk about the space environment and the challenges facing NASA as it implements its new vision for space exploration. Both will share their views on why going where no one has gone before is more important than ever. This is an event for the whole family. Magic Circle Theater “Into the Woods, Jr.,” weaves together Brothers Grimm fairy tales into a lively, irreverent musical production, entangling beloved classic characters as never before. A baker and his wife seek to break a witch’s spell by swindling, deceiving and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Jack. Balch Arena Theater, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Another performance will be given on July 27 at 10:30 a.m. Tickets are $7 for all performances. Finance Training “Forms, Policies and Procedures,” a course designed for new employees with financial responsibilities or those currently at Tufts who need a refresher. Content includes all of the accounting forms used for internal and external procurement and the associated policies and procedures set by Tufts. Some federal regulations pertaining to the forms are covered. Areas of discussion will include interdepartmental requisitions, travel and business expense, hiring and paying consultants, requisitions and purchase orders and foreign tax/alien payment issues. Tufts at Tanglewood The Western Massachusetts Tufts Alliance invites you to bring your family, your Tufts friends and a picnic lunch and enjoy an afternoon program of Mozart, Ravel and Rachmaninoff. The Tufts group will be gathering under the Tufts banner toward the back of the lawn on the right side as you face the Shed. Cost is $17 for lawn tickets at the door. Tanglewood, 297 West St., Lenox, Mass., program begins at 2:30 p.m. Rain date is August 7.
