University Gallery “Overlap,” seven students in the joint graduate degree program of Tufts and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston exhibit their final projects in an MFA thesis exhibition. University Gallery “Selections from the United Nations Sculpture Series,” artist Wenda Gu's fusion of traditional Chinese ink painting, seals and furniture with the materials and notions of a new millennium. Gu began the series in 1993 and has installed it in 15 countries. His two site-specific, 22-foot-high sculptures at Tufts are totems made from human hair of various races, formed into blocks and supporting the pseudo-calligraphic characters of an invented language. Aidekman Arts Center, Remis Sculpture Court, through January 8, 2006. The exhibition is free and open to the public. Forever Free Grand Finale Harold Holzer, one of the country's leading authorities on Abraham Lincoln and the political culture of the Civil War era, presents the final program in conjunction with the Tisch Library exhibition, “Forever Free: Abraham Lincoln's Journey to Emancipation.” Holzer serves as co-chair of the U.S. Lincoln Bicentennial Commission, appointed by President Clinton. Ice Hockey Tufts at New England College, 7 p.m.

Concert The Tufts University Big Band, directed by Joel LaRue Smith, performs a sizzling evening of jazz and Afro-Cuban jazz. Goddard Chapel, 7:30 p.m.

Dance “Dances Over, Under, Through and With--A Contemporary Dance Performance,” the Tufts Dance Performance Ensemble premieres a new piece in collaboration with and under the direction of choreographer Daniel McCusker. The piece documents a variety of experiments for making movement material in which the performers are personally invested. The title of the piece signals the ideas at play in creating and performing the movement, but it also refers to relationships with the music to be performed by the Tufts New Music Ensemble under the direction of John McDonald. Movement elements appear, reappear, overlap, and juxtapose with varying rhythms and qualities. Tickets are $6 with a Tufts ID and $8 general admission. Green Street Studios, Central Square, 185 Green St., Cambridge, 8 p.m. The performance also will be staged on December 3 at the same time and location.
