University Gallery Samantha Simpson’s painting installation, “The Pernicious Natural,” a site-specific, large-scale painting that invites viewers into sweeping allegorical narratives with imagery of lush landscapes painted in electric colors. University Gallery “Feeling Lucky: Recent Sculpture by Karl Stirner.” The artist selects steel plate from the scrap yards of eastern Pennsylvania to create his “essentialist” sculpture. A former blacksmith and metal-worker, Stirner's work transforms ponderous material into substantial—and at times luminous—burnished forms that allude to the anthropomorphized body and body parts and to the functionality of oversized furniture or containers. Magic Circle Theater “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” based on the story by Roald Dahl, is the delectable tale of the incredible Willie Wonka, who has been shut up in his chocolate factory for years, when all of a sudden, he opens the doors to the most fantastic world imaginable. Balch Arena Theater, 10:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Additional performances will take place on August 3 at 10:30 a.m. and August 11 at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 for all performances. Veterinary Seminar “Insights on Teaching from Adult Learning Theory,” Cassandra Volpe Horil, associate director, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University, discusses how graduate school students learn and how teachers can use what we know about the learning process for more effective teaching. The seminar will provide an overview of several learning models that yield insights into teaching practice, including cognitive development, novice/expert behaviors and learning styles. Veterinary Seminar “Learner-centered Teaching: Shifting the Focus of Instructional Design,” Cassandra Volpe Horil, associate director, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University. The seminar will present a learner-centered instructional design process that connects specific teaching techniques and evaluation methods to desired learning outcomes, much like the scientific method connects logical deductions and experiments to hypotheses. Magic Circle Theater “Into the Woods, Jr.,” weaves together Brothers Grimm fairy tales into a lively, irreverent musical production, entangling beloved classic characters as never before.
