SEPTEMBER 1
Labor Day University holiday; no classes.

SEPTEMBER 2
Classes begin for undergraduates and graduate students on the Medford/Somerville campus; registration for Experimental College classes.

Tisch Library Fall semester hours through December 18 are Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-1 a.m.; Friday, 8 a.m.-9 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-1 a.m.

Athletics Facilities Semester hours of operation for the Cousens Gymnasium complex on the Medford/Somerville campus are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-10:30 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; and Sunday, 10 a.m.-10:30 p.m. Hamilton Pool hours are Monday through Friday, 7:15-8:15 a.m., 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., and 7:30-10:30 p.m.; Saturday, noon-7 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-10:30 p.m.

Lost Theatres of Somerville The stories of the old Somerville picture palaces have been resurrected by David M. Guss, associate professor of anthropology at Tufts, and his students in an exhibition that documents this piece of cultural history. Somerville Museum, 1 Westwood Road, Somerville, Mass., through March 2004. Admission is free. SEPTEMBER 4
University Gallery "RUNNING HOT and Steady with the WCA," the Boston chapter of the Women's Caucus for Art celebrates its new association with Tufts University in this juried exhibition, featuring the work of more than 25 area artists in media including oil painting, watercolors, works on paper, photography, two- and three-dimensional mixed media and monoprints. The exhibition is juried by Madeline H. Caviness, Mary Richardson Professor and professor of art history at Tufts, narrative painter Gail Boyajian and Gallery Director John Colan of HallSpace. Slater Concourse Gallery, Aidekman Arts Center, through October 12. University Gallery "The September Show," a thesis exhibition featuring work by five students in the joint Tufts-School of the Museum of Fine Arts master's degree program. Featured artists are Matthew Gamber, who uses a large antique view camera to evoke the aura of the late 19th and early 20th centuries in his work; Rose Hill, who works with personal history and personae to create live, interactive pieces; Jeff Huckleberry, who specializes in performance art that incorporates live electronic sound work; Natalie Loveless, who responds to distinct contextual and physical spaces through the development of wall drawing and sound installations; and Deewayne Sowels, who investigates the contemporary landscape of a dense city through photography. Koppelman Gallery, Aidekman Arts Center, through September 21. SEPTEMBER 6
Exhibit "Venturing Against the Odds: Stories of Enterprising Women" highlights Tufts historian Virginia Drachman's most recent book, Enterprising Women: 250 Years of American Business (University of North Carolina Press, 2002) as well as her three previous books: Sisters in Law: Women Lawyers in Modern American History, Hospital with a Heart: Women Doctors and the Paradox of Separation at the New England Hospital, 1862-1969 and Women Lawyers and the Origins of Professional Identity in America: The Letters of the Equity Club, 1887-1890. Tisch Library lobby, through November 3.

Veterinary School Open House Come spend a day on the Grafton campus, featuring self-guided tours of the Hospital for Large Animals, the Henry and Lois Foster Hospital for Small Animals and the farm, exhibits in the Bernice Barbour Wildlife Medicine Building, working dog demonstrations, a sheep shearing demonstration and a birds of prey demonstration. Refreshments will be available or visitors can bring a picnic lunch. Admission and parking are free. No pets are allowed on campus during the open house. SEPTEMBER 21
PetTrek The third annual walk-a-thon for the Harrington Oncology Program at Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine will take place on Tufts' cross country course, rain or shine. Sponsored walkers can trek either the one-mile or three-mile course. Pets with up-to-date rabies vaccinations that are on leashes or held in carriers are also welcome to join in. The Worcester Sheriff's Department and Templeton Developmental Center will entertain walkers with K-9 dog demonstrations. Refreshments will be sold. Last year, PetTrek walkers raised $12,000 for Tufts' oncology program, which provides state-of-the-art cancer treatment for more than 2,500 animals each year. Film Premiere The U.S. premiere of "Rachel of the Comédie-Française," a documentary by Judith Wechsler, the National Endowment for the Humanities Professor in Tufts' Department of Art and Art History, and Rachel Brownstein, a professor at the City University of New York. Film score by John McDonald, associate professor of music at Tufts. The film tells the story of Rachel Felix (1821-1868), the daughter of Jewish peddlers from Alsace who became a star at the Comédie-Française in the heyday of Romanticism. She revitalized the Comédie-Française, made high culture popular by playing the classical female roles as if they were living women and was the first international dramatic star. The film is in French with English subtitles and voiceovers.
