APRIL 1
Lost Theatres of Somerville The stories of the old Somerville picture palaces have been resurrected by David M. Guss, associate professor of anthropology at Tufts, and his students in an exhibition that documents this piece of cultural history. Somerville Museum, 1 Westwood Road, Somerville, Mass., through March 2004. Admission is free. Exhibition "Anita Shreve and the Houses in Her Novels." The award-winning author of The Weight of Water and The Pilot's Wife, Shreve, who graduated from Tufts in 1968, took part of her inspiration from a photo of a house near her summer home when she began imagining people and events to go with its weathered exterior. The photo of the house is on display along with quotes about the house from her various books, which are set at different time periods. Tisch Library lobby, through April 5.

Nutrition Policy Seminar Series "Agricultural Risk Management Policies and the Environment: An Economic Assessment," Jay Shimshack, assistant professor of economics, Tufts University. This seminar, drawing from Shimshack's research, examines the implications of agricultural risk management strategies for the environment. Particular emphasis will be placed on the land-use and chemical input-use incentives induced by prominent crop insurance programs. Nutrition Policy Seminar Series "Preventing and Controlling Micronutrient Deficiencies—Does Having the International Goals Help?" Ian Darnton-Hill, visiting associate professor, Institute of Human Nutrition, Columbia University. There has been good international agreement on goals to eliminate the iodine deficiency disorders and vitamin A deficiency as public health problems and substantially reduce iron deficiency anemia. The goals have sometimes been criticized as being "top-down" and vertical. Progress has been variable, and new goals were set in 2002. The session will describe the constraints and facilitating factors in trying to reach the goals. As micronutrient malnutrition affects nearly 2 billion people worldwide, this is an important aspect of public health nutrition.
