Dedication of the Peggy Barrett Study Barrett devoted 27 years to the Tufts University Women’s Center, coming on board seven years after it opened in 1972 and serving until 2006. An Artist’s Sense of Place: The Watercolors of Gertrude Beals Bourne Discover the dynamic watercolors of Boston native Gertrude Beals Bourne (1868–1962), a prominent member of Beacon Hill/Back Bay society who worked as a professional artist at a time when Boston’s art community was flourishing. She traveled the world and painted vivid, spontaneous scenes of her journeys and of her life in the city, all the while continuing to explore and evolve as an artist. Baccalaureate Service The traditional baccalaureate service, which honors graduating seniors at Tufts, began in 1865. “Baccalaureate” technically means a sermon to a graduating class, and for most of Tufts’ history, the inspirational message has been delivered by the university president. In recent years, the baccalaureate has been an interfaith service, with all university chaplains organizing and participating in the service. Family and friends are invited to attend. The winner of the 2009 Wendell Phillips Award, Anjali Nirmalan, a senior sociology major, will speak, and members of the senior Baccalaureate Committee and the chaplains will present readings and prayers. Tufts Environmental Literacy Institute A four-day faculty development workshop to enhance faculty literacy on climate change and climate justice runs from May 18 to 21. Faculty participants in the workshop are expected to modify an existing course, through the addition of climate change/climate justice content, or to create a new course. Because of the focus on curriculum development, faculty will be compensated $500 for their participation. Topics addressed in the workshop will include climate challenges faced by the Obama administration; the road to Copenhagen, where the next major international treaty will be drawn up to succeed the Kyoto Protocol in December 2009; and climate solutions that address other societal needs. Individuals interested in participating are requested to secure the approval of their department chair.
